“If you bothered to dress half as well on the outside as you do underneath, I’d be the happiest mother alive.” My mum, shopping with me for lingerie when I was a teenager.
I never needed an excuse to buy lingerie, not a boyfriend nor a special occasion. Lucky for me, I spent many of my teenage years in France, where delicate, colorful lace is the rule rather than the exception. And my mother, giving up entirely on cute skirts and frilly tops, found some girly consolation in scouring shops like Etam, Princess Tam Tam and Orcanta for me.
My love for lingerie hasn’t faded. Years passed and I discovered the pleasures of stockings, garter belts and corsets. I always keep a few of each in my closet, wearing them under work clothes or party outfits. First, because there are few things less pleasant (or graceful) than tights cutting into your waist (when it’s so easily fixed with stay-ups). More importantly, though, it’s the easiest way of dressing to impress: you’ll hold yourself differently and they’ll be none the wiser.
I’ve never forced it upon anyone, but I can’t tell you how lovely it is to me when a man knows what he likes and helps you shop for it. Better yet, when he knows your size and surprises you with it. I can’t speak for all women, but as far as I can tell, a bit of objectification in the bedroom doesn’t hurt (before some of you bite my head off: YES, as long as it’s playful and consensual). Gentlemen, I’d advise you to check with your ladies before going one way or the other, but you might be surprised to find little opposition on their part.
Now, as I said, I never needed an excuse to enjoy it privately. To discuss it in public, however, I’ll use the fact that we’re a mere month away from Valentine’s Day. I’ll be posting a few of my favorite brands, models and collections. If you feel inspired and inclined to share your personal preferences, all the better.
