“Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all.”
This beautiful creature has been staring at mom’s house from across the street for over a week. I’m absolutely enthralled. After several photos from across the street over the past few days, I was finally able to slowly and carefully creep right up next to the tree without spooking the crap out of it and making it fly away. This is the best photo so far.
OTHER NOTES: It’s officially a Barred Owl (Strix varia; known best as a hoot owl). Not sure if it’s a female or male, though. Any birders around? My favorite new trivia: the most common mnemonic device for remembering the sound and cadence of a hoot owl call is this: “Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all.”
My mom and sister have been on the hunt for names. Anna might have just clinched it with ‘Sophie’ (owls = wisdom, knowledge, &c.), but… any ideas for names?

Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all.

  7. rartastic answered: My dad loves birds and he taught me that call when I was 5! You could name him Bill after my dad. But he looks more like a William
  8. vermiciousknid answered: The obvious Harry Potter answer is Hedwig, though I personally prefer Pigwigeon. Although this owl doesn’t look too high-strung.
  9. kimlisagor answered: William (the Bard owl)
